What its like to have a little brother with autism

By: Shelbylyn Lightner

Everyone always asks me what is it like to have a little brother with autism. It’s a mix of emotions. I’m so glad to have my little brother but sometimes I catch myself crying when I’m alone when I think about the way other kids are going to treat him. December 2015 changed my life when I found out Sheldon was diagnosed with autism. I’ll never forget how I felt the fear and overwhelming thoughts.  I had all these plans for him.  When I was sixteen, my mom told me I was going to have a little brother. I was so excited and couldn’t wait to take him everywhere with me and hear him talk!

Now, I’m still just as excited. Sheldon may have autism but that does not mean he will never talk or do everything I had planned for him no matter what. I love him more everyday and I just want him to know there is nothing wrong with him and I will never try to change to him!

Being an autism sister is the hardest thing I have ever had to do but I know one day when I hear you say your first word it will always all be worth it!
