Experience 5: Understanding communication
For this experience, you need the plastic cups.
Put the cups in front of you and you are given instructions.
You are not allowed to ask any questions.
Now after trying for the first time, you are given a visual of what the cups are supposed to look like.
Autism experience and how you can help
Autism experience:
When you were told verbally what to do, you couldn’t understand what they were asking. However, when you had a visual, you could better understand what was being asked.
Some people with autism can’t always process what is being asked of them.
How you can help:
People with autism may need a visual to better understand what you are saying, and in times when visuals might not be available, use a more direct and descriptive approach to communicating as well as body language.
